The cloud division of a Fortune 10 technology company operated a serverless functions platform that lets developers run small pieces of code in response to events without managing servers. The product team was planning a new template gallery and template-creation flow to help developers get started faster, and wanted to know whether the design would actually be used before committing engineering effort to it.
The team had several open questions. How do developers currently start a new function, and where does that journey break down? Are the proposed templates complete enough to be useful, and do novice and expert users want the same things? How does the getting-started experience compare with competing serverless offerings? And which barriers, from editor maturity to integrations, discourage developers from building more on the platform? The team needed structured, first-hand answers from people who used the product in production, not internal assumptions.
PP&A designed the study around in-depth interviews with eight experienced users of the platform, drawn from organizations that relied on serverless functions for data transformation, peak-load management, intermittent workloads and Internet of Things pipelines. PP&A developed the interview guide with the client's product managers after a scoping call that set the study's objectives: the getting-started journey, template completeness, the novice-versus-expert distinction, comparison with competing offerings, and adoption barriers.
Each interview combined open discussion of how the developer worked today with a structured walk-through of the proposed template gallery and creation flow. Participants reacted slide by slide to the mock-ups, following the flow from finding a template to configuring, previewing and saving it. The team recorded reactions to each individual design element.
PP&A consolidated the findings into a top-line summary that paired each element of the design with what developers said, what they expected instead, and where the team should reconsider. PP&A delivered the call notes and the scoping notes alongside it so the product team could trace every recommendation to its source.
The product team received a top-line summary with the call notes and scoping notes behind it. The summary explained why experienced developers choose the platform, how they start a new function, and how they view templates, from trust in third-party code to reuse across projects. The slide-by-slide review recorded, for each element of the proposed gallery and creation flow, what developers expected and where the design missed it. It also captured the requests developers raised beyond the design itself. The team came away with a prioritized list of design changes, each traced to developer evidence, and a view of which parts of the gallery experienced users would adopt and which they would bypass. That gave it a firmer basis for its roadmap and for tightening the getting-started journey for newcomers.
