PP&A Case Study
Voice of Customer Survey for a Software Commercial Due Diligence
How a Fortune 10 technology company surveyed 67 U.S. finance and IT leaders about a software target
Client Situation

The commercial due-diligence team at a Fortune 10 technology company was evaluating a financial management and automation (FM&A) software provider whose products cover order-to-cash, treasury and risk, and record-to-report processes. Management presentations and reference customers told one side of the story. The team wanted the other side: what buyers who had used the product and moved on, or evaluated it and chosen a competitor, actually thought of it.

The brief was specific. The team needed a quantitative read on the provider's perceived weaknesses and areas for improvement across its three functional areas, with enough sample to cut the results by industry and company size, and with a geographic focus on the U.S. states the team had prioritized. The answer had to arrive within weeks to fit the diligence timetable.

Our Approach

PP&A led the research design and analysis for a voice-of-customer survey fielded in April 2024. The questionnaire was built around the client's diligence questions: which FM&A functional areas matter most to buyers, how the provider's features perform against peers in each area, which capabilities respondents believe are lacking, and what an ideal solution would look like.

Respondents were screened to director level and above in finance, accounting, IT and operations at mid-size and large companies, and had to have used or formally evaluated the provider within the previous two years. The survey combined an online instrument with telephone interviewing and closed with 67 completed responses at a median of about 17 minutes each, spanning banking and financial services, manufacturing, healthcare and life sciences, e-commerce and retail, energy and other verticals, and more than twenty states weighted toward the client's priority markets.

The analysis ranked the functional areas by importance, scored each of the provider's features against peers, and produced deep-dive cuts by industry and company size, so that the diligence team could see whether weaknesses were general or concentrated in particular segments.

Client Results

The survey gave the diligence team an independent, quantified view of the target from buyers who had used or evaluated it. The report ranked the functional areas by their importance to buyers and scored the provider's features against peers in each one. It set out the strengths respondents credited to the product and the improvement areas they named. The industry and company-size cuts showed whether each weakness was general or concentrated in particular segments. The report closed with the themes an ideal FM&A solution would need to address. The diligence team took away a customer-grounded input for its assessment of the target, drawn from the buyers that management presentations and reference customers leave out.
